May 4 2026 2020-2026 Corsair/Escape, 2021-2026 Bronco Sport, 2022-2026 Maverick - 8F35 Transmission - Torque Converter Shudder
Some 2020-2026 Corsair/Escape, 2021-2026 Bronco Sport, and 2022-2026 Maverick vehicles equipped with an 8F35 transmission may exhibit a shudder condition, most noticeable at speeds below 60 mph (100 km/h), with no relevant diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) stored in the powertrain control module (PCM). Sometimes, this may be perceived/felt as an engine misfire. This may be due to the torque converter.
If Pinpoint Test K: Torque Converter Clutch Operation in Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-01 > Diagnosis and Testing > Diagnosis by Symptom directs to replace the torque converter, remove and replace the torque converter and torque converter seal. Refer to WSM, Section 307-01 > Removal and Installation > Torque Converter Seal. Remove the main control valve body. Refer to WSM, Section 307-01 > Removal and Installation > Main Control Valve Body.
Overhaul and thoroughly clean the main control valve body. Refer to WSM, Section 307-01 > Overhaul > Main Control Valve Body. Reverse the removal procedure to reassemble the transmission. Install the transmission.
Refer to WSM, Section 307-01 > Installation. For claiming, use causal part 7902 and labor operations 7001D, 7000A, 7000A7, and 7000A13.
Repairs requiring replacement or overhaul of the torque converter, torque converter seal, or main control valve body do not qualify for Low Time in Service (LTIS) transmission assembly replacement. Refer to Professional Technician System (PTS) > Service Tips for the LTIS Job Aid and Technician Step by Step Guide to LTIS (April 2026) for more information on LTIS eligibility.
NOTE: Advise the customer this vehicle is equipped with an adaptive transmission shift strategy which allows the vehicle’s computer to learn the transmission’s unique parameters and improve shift quality. When the adaptive strategy is reset, the computer will begin a relearning process. This relearning process may result in firmer than normal upshifts and downshifts for several days.
