原文是" a piece of the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF"

:yaoming:

To determine how much you need to spend on your credit card to justify the annual fee of $128 through the benefits of cashback, we first calculate the amount of spending required to offset the fee using the cashback alone. After that, we can factor in the potential investment growth from investing the cashback into VOO, an ETF that historically has about 9% annual growth.

Step 1: Calculating the Spending Required to Offset the Fee with Cashback Alone

You receive 3% cashback per transaction. To find out how much spending is required to earn back the annual fee of $128 with this cashback, you use the formula:

[
\text{Annual Fee} = \text{Spending} \times \text{Cashback Rate}
]

Let ( S ) be the amount of spending needed. Rearranging the formula, we get:

[
S = \frac{\text{Annual Fee}}{\text{Cashback Rate}}
]

Step 2: Considering the Investment Growth

If you invest the cashback into VOO, the amount of cashback earned would potentially grow by about 9% annually. However, to simplify, we’ll first find the spending required to just break even on the annual fee before considering investment returns.

Let’s compute the necessary spending based on the cashback rate of 3% to cover the $128 fee.

To cover the $128 annual fee solely through the 3% cashback, you would need to spend approximately $4,267 per year.

Considering Investment Growth

Now, if you invest the cashback from this spending into VOO, which historically has about a 9% annual growth, the value of your cashback after one year could be estimated. Let’s calculate the value of your cashback after one year at 9% growth:

  • Initial cashback: (3% \times $4,267)
  • Value after one year of growth: (\text{Initial cashback} \times (1 + 9%))

Let’s calculate that.

After investing your initial cashback of 3% from spending $4,267 in VOO, which has an average annual growth of 9%, the cashback would grow to approximately $139.52 after one year.

Thus, by spending $4,267 annually on your credit card, not only do you offset the $128 annual fee through the cashback, but the invested cashback could potentially grow to exceed the fee, further justifying the card’s cost under these conditions.

Neon Matt?

For $128, you get a premium designed metal card, packed with perks and backed by the security and benefits of the Amex® network.
