San Francisco International Airport is now allowing approved visitors without plane tickets to go past security, bringing back a once familiar airport ritual: walking loved ones to the gate and meeting them when they arrive.
The new program, called SFO Gate Explorer, follows a similar one launched by Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport late last year, as airports around the Bay Area and beyond look for ways to bring back gate greetings while drawing more visitors to terminal shops and restaurants.
Visitors can apply online as early as 30 days before their trip to the airport or on the same day, SFO says. Applicants must submit identifying information that matches a government-issued ID. The airport says the Transportation Security Administration reviews the applications, and approved visitors receive a digital pass after midnight on the day of their visit.
